Residents of a west Greeley neighborhood are taking the state to court, arguing it's ignoring new rules that were supposed to improve communication between oil and gas companies and communities.
Residents near the proposed Triple Creek project want to stop construction of 22 wells and oil tanks nearby.
At issue is a 2015 rule adopted by the state. It requires companies show they considered alternative sites for production, and requires use of the best available technologies to lessen local impact like pipelines over trucks to transport the oil and gas.
Greeley residents say the state failed on both considerations when it approved the project. The lawsuit asks for the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission to vacate its original decision and that it reconsider the location for oil and gas wells and tanks, as well as construction of pipelines.
On Friday, the COGCC declined to comment on the lawsuit.
