Peter Trinh's parents fled Vietnam in 1981, six years after the war ended there. He says they climbed onto a small fishing boat, packed with nearly 100 people and their life savings, and eventually settled in Denver.
Trinh wrote a one-act play about their plight called "Boat Person." It's part of an evening of works called "Coming to America," Theatre Esprit Asia, the state's only Asian-American theater troupe, premiered the show in the fall of 2015. Trinh is the organization's assistant artistic director.
In collaboration with Theater Company of Lafayette, "Coming to America" returns Jan. 13 - 22 at The Mary Miller Theater.
Trinh spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
