When the nonprofit Athena Project put out the call for scripts from female playwrights, 250 submissions poured in. Sarah Bierstock's "Honor Killing" stood out. After a year of development and a world premiere in Florida, the play returns to Colorado for a debut at the Jewish Community Center on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Angela Astle is the director of "Honor Killing" and the executive producer of Athena Project, which incubates and exhibits art by women. Astle talked to Colorado Matters about the meaning behind the play and the organization's work.
In "Honor Killing," a reporter travels to Dubai to report on an honor killing in Pakistan. Because she's not allowed into the country, she uses Skype and other platforms to connect with sources. Her video and text conversations are projected onto screens onstage in real time.
