Critics of the GOP legislation entitled the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” say the measure is redundant because federal law already bans abortions funded by taxpayers.
The measure includes incentives for businesses to drop insurance coverage for abortions and would levy tax penalties against some women who receive abortions.
Congresswoman Degette calls the measure an assault on women’s right to choose.
“This bill, which has been tried before and failed over and over again, is a frontal assault on a woman’s right to have full reproductive health care," Degette said.
While the abortion debate was raging at the Capitol, across the street at the U.S. Supreme Court, Justices heard oral arguments over whether buffer zones outside of abortion clinics violated anti-abortion protestor’s free speech rights.
The Court upheld a similar Colorado law 14 years ago.
