The New York Philharmonic, one of the most storied orchestras on the planet, begins its two-week residency this week at Bravo! Vail.
Music Director Alan Gilbert leads the orchestra in a trio of Beethoven pieces: the Overture to “Fidelio” and Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 5, both featuring soloist Yefim Bronfman.
Click the audio above to hear CPR Classical’s Charley Samson discuss the New York Philharmonic’s rich past -- including past music directors Leonard Bernstein, Gustav Mahler, Toscanini, Pierre Boulez and Lorin Maazel -- and why it’s a joy to see the orchestra in Vail.
“People read about this orchestra and follow its history,” Samson says. “To see them, and see how the reputation is deserved, is thrilling.”
Tune in at 6 p.m. Saturday to hear them live as part of the SummerFest concert broadcast series from Colorado Public Radio.
