Dennis, who won Stage 4 on Thursday to assume the race lead, covered the 8.5-mile circuit in 18 minutes, 11 seconds. The Australian was 27 seconds ahead of Rob Britton and 31 seconds ahead of teammate Brent Bookwalter.
Dennis averaged 27 miles per hour over Friday's course which included a short steep climb over Boreas Pass at more than 10,000 feet elevation. Dennis raced up that same climb to win Thursday's stage during the road race from Aspen to Breckenridge. “It was still painful, probably more painful,” Dennis said.
The sixth stage Saturday takes the men 102 miles to Fort Collins, with the women riding a 58-mile route. Both races end Sunday.
