More than two years after its expected launch, the Regional Transportation District’s 11- mile G Line commuter train from Union Station to Wheat Ridge will open April 26.
The rail line was originally planned to open in October 2016 but problems with the timing of the crossing gates led to delays. The University of Colorado A Line to the Denver International Airport had the same safety technology and timing issues at crossings so federal regulators delayed the G Line until RTD addressed the A Line problems.
“We've shown continuous improvement on the newish Colorado A Line and B Line and reached a point where the regulators are all OK with everything we're doing, and they've granted us all the approvals now to open the G line,” said Dave Genova, RTD’s general manager and CEO.
The agency expects to record 9,000 passenger trips per day during the line's first year and riders will likely see flaggers at some intersections as a precaution.
Rides on the line will be free for the first two days.
Officials also say the 2.3-mile light rail extension of the E, F and R Line to Lone Tree will open May 19.
