MahlerFest: Schoenberg and More
When
Event Description
"Arnold Schoenberg’s first major work, the string sextet Verklärte Nacht, is based on a poem by Richard Dehmel that describes a man and woman out walking on a cold night. The premiere on March 18, 1902 was met with some unfavorable reaction, perhaps attributable to anti-semitism. However, Schoenberg’s work impressed Mahler, who was in the audience that night."
