Sabine Distinguished Lecture, Thomas A. Pyszczynski, Ph.D., ”The Role of Death in Life: Understanding the Human Quest for Meaning in Life, Self-esteem, and Close Relationships”

Tom Pyszczynski is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He received his PhD in psychology from the Univeristy of Kansas in 1980. With his colleagues Jeff Greenberg and Sheldon Solomon, he developed Terror Management Theory, which explores the role of cultural worldviews and self-esteem in managing anxiety resulting from awareness of the inevitability of death. He has published hundreds of articles in scientific journals exploring the implications of terror management theory for understanding diverse aspects of life. He is co-author of the books, The Worm at the Core: The Role of Death in Life, the Handbook of Experimental Existential Psychology, and Self-regulatory Perseveration: Understanding the Onset, Progression and Remission of Depression. He received lifetime achievement awards from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the International Society for Self and Identity, the International Society for the Science of Existential Psychology, and the Rocky Mountain Humanistic and Existential Psychology Association.
