Event Description

The Colorado College Music Department presents a masterclass and concert with longtime musicians and composers Steve Barta, jazz piano, and Joe Uveges, singer/songwriter, on Thursday, Nov. 3 at Packard Hall. The workshop, “Songwriting With Word and Without: Approaches to Musical Composition,” begins at 3 p.m., and the concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Both events are free and open to the public.

The afternoon workshop offers an opportunity for participants to learn about two distinct approaches to writing music. Uveges will share insight into his creative process that involves lyrics, and he will offer tools for students to explore their own creative outlets. Barta, whose works range from solo piano to full symphony orchestra, will share his approach to instrumental songwriting, his process, and attitudes.

The concert later that evening features the two veteran artists together on stage.

Uveges is a Colorado Springs-based singer/songwriter who has been working as a musician for more than 34 years. He has over 3,100 shows under his belt, movie credits, eight original albums and is a five-time first-place winner of the yearly “Go: Best Of the Gazette.” He still performs locally solo, with his daughter (Katie), and with his band (The BUS Band).

Barta is a Grammy-nominated pianist, composer, recording artist, producer, author and educator. He has performed his original works as a solo artist, and with jazz ensembles and symphony orchestras. As a member of Herbie Mann and Jasil Brazz featuring Steve Barta, he recorded his widely acclaimed Blue River with this New York-based ensemble – an original collection of his Brazilian compositions. His discography includes 15 recordings that reflect his many influences, particularly Brazilian, jazz and classical. He's currently instructor of jazz piano at Colorado College.
