Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is hiring a fellow for the Max Wycisk News Fellowship.
This is not a remote position. This role is expected to work from our newsroom in downtown Denver upon starting. The Fellowship runs from September 2025 to August 2026.
About the Position:
This fellowship opportunity prepares the next generation of public media journalists. In this role, you will contribute to CPR’s core mission of delivering meaningful news to Coloradans using the human voice in all its forms. In this capacity, we will train you on what that means and how to achieve it.
You will rotate across news teams over the course of one year with CPR. These teams include our Daily Team and Colorado Matters, with an opportunity to develop additional skills in long-form audio production.
The fellowship is specifically designed to support recent graduates, early career journalists, those who have had only freelance experience, OR folks looking to pivot into the field of journalism. If you have 2+ years of professional experience in the audio journalism field or in a newsroom, we ask that you apply to other CPR newsroom positions.
Key learning objectives for this experience include -
- Developing reporting skills for on-air and digital work, including but not limited to; interviewing skills, understanding audience, and source identification.
- Understanding how to gather in-the-field audio and how to use software to edit it for delivery on the radio and online.
- Delivering high-quality journalism in audio and digital formats.
- Developing the skills to navigate challenging ethical situations in the field.
- Understanding the key skills and experiences needed to pursue a career in public media.
About You:
You are a recent graduate or early career journalist who is looking to further develop your skills in journalism. Or you might be newer to journalism, but want to pivot into a career in this field because you already have translatable writing skills and an understanding of the core ethics and principles of journalism. You're self-motivated, creative, curious, and interested in supporting journalism’s role in shaping democracy and educating communities. You know how to distill information from a variety of sources, and are looking for an opportunity to grow and develop your talents in the world of public radio.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of fair and accurate reporting is required.
- Experience with Google Suite or similar technology including word processing software, spreadsheets, email and messaging systems.
- Experience with using search engines, and an understanding of how to utilize tools such as social media to promote content.
- Strong writing skills including grammar, spelling, and constructing clear and concise sentences. Experience using research, data and interviews to construct fair and factual writing.
- Experience collaborating with others on projects and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people across many areas of interest and platforms.
- An interest in generating stories that speak to varied, real human experiences.
- An interest in earning trust, developing ongoing source relationships, and reporting on issues that impact underserved communities.
- Must have less than 2 years of relevant professional experience in the field of journalism.
- A valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required as this role needs access to reliable transportation to respond with urgency to news events. Newsroom vehicles may sometimes be available for your use.
Education Equivalency:
- While a degree is not necessary, the fellowship is specifically designed to support recent graduates, early career journalists with less than 2 years of experience, OR folks looking to pivot into the field of journalism.
