Republican incumbent Doug Lamborn has served in Congress since 2007.
He earned journalism and law degrees from the University of Kansas before moving to Colorado Springs and establishing a private law practice. He won a state House seat in 1994, then moved to the state Senate 1998. After stints as the Republican House Whip in 1997, and Senate President Pro-tem in 1999, he beat Lieutenant Colonel Jay Fawcett to replace retiring congressman Joel Hefley.
Democrat Stephany Rose Spaulding is a newcomer to elected politics.
Spaulding earned a bachelor’s degree from Clark Atlanta University and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Purdue. She’s now a tenured Associate Professor of Women’s and Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs and a Senior Pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church of Colorado Springs. She’s held leadership in numerous faith-based and civic organizations such as the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Institute, the Urban League, and the YMCA Pikes Peak Region Education Task Force.
