Stacey Freedenthal, a psychotherapist in Denver who studies suicide, kept a secret for years.
Until recently, Freedenthal, who's also an associate professor at the University of Denver, hadn't revealed that she herself had attempted suicide in her 20s. Freedenthal talked to Colorado Matters about her history of mental health challenges, which she wrote about in the New York Times in May.
She recalls feeling like depression was "stalking" her in graduate school. Freedenthal fixated on small things and said she bathed in self-hatred. She now writes about her experiences in her blog, Speaking of Suicide.
