A new play opening this week at Curious Theatre Company takes cues from the Masterpiece Cakeshop case and other controversial clashes between business owners and LGBTQ customers.
"The Cake" makes its regional premiere in Denver on Saturday, Sept. 1 and runs through Oct. 13. Curious Theatre producing artistic director Chip Walton and actress Emma Messenger talked to Colorado Matters about how the production reflects upon current events.
"The Cake" takes place in North Carolina, where a baker declines to make a family friend a wedding cake after she realizes it's a same-sex marriage. Playwright Bekah Brunstetter was inspired by her own childhood in the South, and hopes that the production will encourage people to listen to one another.
