After President Trump's inauguration, Denver's Curious Theatre Company did something unprecedented. It mounted a new, relatively untested production mid-season. "Building the Wall," which runs through Wednesday, is a politically charged response to Trump's immigration rhetoric written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Robert Schenkkan.
In notes about the play on his website, Schenkkan writes, "We are experiencing an extraordinary moment in the life of our Republic, an unprecedented crisis which is not a partisan issue but an American version of authoritarianism which is waging an all-out attack on fundamental American values." The play is said to draw parallels to Nazi Germany and George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984."
Denver is the second city to stage the fully produced play, which will travel to Washington D.C., Santa Fe, New Mexico, Tucson, Arizona and Miami next.
Katie Maltais is Curious Theatre’s managing director. She spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
