Loren Naftz spreads a cinnamon filling on King Cake pastry that she’ll then roll up and form into rings before baking and decorating King Cake at Rheinlander Bakery in Old Town Arvada, Feb. 6, 2024. King Cake has its roots in Catholic festivals marking Epiphany; in the United States its also associated with Mardi Gras.

It's Fat Tuesday! The season of parades, masquerade balls and lots and lots of fun, would not be complete without a slice or two... (or three)... of king cake! And the good news is that you don't have to head to New Orleans for a slice of the delectable, sweet treat.

Rheinlander Bakery, a German bakery located in Olde Town Arvada, has been making king cake for nearly 20 years now. I spoke with co-owner Loren Naftz last Mardi Gras in the bakery.

And if you are down for some Fat Tuesday fun. this evening, Olde Town Arvada hosts its annual Mardi Gras celebration from 5:30 - 7:00 pm in front of Carly's Boutique with live music from Guerrilla Fanfare. Many of the restaurants will be offering food and drink specials.
