At a Colorado Safe Parking Initiative site in Commerce City for the unhoused living in their cars, site manager Michael Meyer handles applications, ensures visitors abide by a set of rules, and keeps the site free of litter. He and his wife also live on the site while he waits for an opening in Section 8 housing.

Many people experiencing homelessness end up sleeping in their cars. but finding a safe place to park can be challenging and at times virtually impossible. One new program is helping to change that. The number of safe places to park overnight along the Front Range has doubled in the past year thanks to the efforts of the Colorado Safe Parking Initiative. The program has been working to fill the void as many Coloradans increasingly find themselves unable to afford rent. Terrell Curtis is executive director of the Colorado Safe Parking Initiative. Michael Meyer manages one of the parking lots used in the program.
