Denver native Karlya Shelton-Benjamin is featured in the new book, “The Swans of Harlem: Five Black Ballerinas, Fifty Years of Sisterhood, and Their Reclamation of a Groundbreaking History”

They're known as the Swans of Harlem and they've performed for the Queen of England, Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, at the White House, and beyond. Karlya Shelton-Benjamin, a Denver native, was among them, and she's featured in a new book about this pioneering group of ballerinas.

The book is called "The Swans of Harlem: Five Black Ballerinas, Fifty Years of Sisterhood, and their Reclamation of a Groundbreaking History."

Karlya Shelton-Benjamin will take part in what's billed as an evening in conversation with dance legend Cleo Parker-Robinson, hosted by Black Resilience in Colorado, also known as BRIC, taking place at Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theatre on Wednesday, May 22.

And she will also share her story and sign books at the Tattered Cover Bookstore in Denver on Saturday, May 25.
