For Boulder’s Neal Henderson, There’s A Science To Coaching Olympians

Athletes are often the focus of the Olympics but coaches may be the unsung heroes.

Neal Henderson has coached endurance sport athletes since the 1990s. He founded APEX Coaching in Boulder and trains national and world champions, as well as Olympians, in cycling and triathlon.

A number of those athletes will compete in the Rio Olympic Games, including road cyclist Evelyn Stevens, two-time Olympic triathlete Flora Duffy -- who will compete for Bermuda in triathlon -- and the female riders competing for the U.S. in the team pursuit track cycling event.

The Boulder coach is not one for motivational speeches. He uses a more data-driven, scientific approach to train athletes. Henderson spoke with Colorado Matters host Ryan Warner.
