When Becca Longo signed a national letter of intent with Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado, she didn't think it was a big deal.
She knew that other females, including Katie Hnida at the University of Colorado Boulder, had played college football. But that quickly changed... First when her coach at Basha High School in Chandler, Arizona, announced she was the first female to receive a scholarship to play football (Hnida was a walk-on at both CU and New Mexico), and then later, when the interview requests — more than 100 in just over a week — started to roll in.
"I’m really surprised; I didn’t expect any of it — not to the extent it's been," she said.
Longo, who made 35-of-38 extra point attempts as well as a field goal during her senior year, sent a highlight reel out to a number of colleges, including Adams State. When the Grizzlies responded by sending one of their assistant coaches to Arizona to see her in person, Longo said her decision was an easy one.
Longo, who will also play basketball on the women's team at Adams State, spoke with Colorado Matters host Andrea Dukakis.
