Frank Clarke, who made Buffs history as the first African American varsity football player at CU Boulder, died last week at age 84. The wide receiver was on the varsity team in 1955 and 1956, and was inducted into the CU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
Clarke went on to join the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys. He played during one of the best-known NFL Championship Games, the 1967 Ice Bowl, where the windchill reached 48 degrees below zero.
One of Clarke’s Buffs teammates, former NFL player John Wooten, was CU's second African American player. Wooten spoke to Colorado Matters about Clarke’s legacy on and off the field.
