Aurora police made crucial mistakes in their treatment of Elijah McClain within 10 seconds of stopping him on the street, independent investigators said Monday.
Within minutes the officers applied two carotid chokeholds. Soon afterwards, an EMS worker injected him with the sedative Ketamine. McClain died a few days later.
On Monday, investigators released a 157-page report on the confrontation that took place in August 2019. Later that day, an investigator told the Aurora City Council there was never enough reason to subdue McClain. Denverite reporter Esteban Hernandez has been covering the case.
